Walking the City

“And why walk, if not to create a new set of possibilities? … Walking is an act of faith. Walking is, after all, interrupted falling. We see, we listen, we speak, and we trust that each step we take won’t be our last, but will lead us into a richer understanding of the self and the world.”
- Garnette Cadogan, Walking While Black, 2016

“The act of walking is to the urban system what the speech act is to language or to the statements uttered.” - Michel de Certeau, Walking in the City, 1974 (a reflection by Jonathan L. Best)

The CRC nurtures opportunities for intentional and reflective walking in the city.

Through walking fellowships, tours, and other learning experiences, the CRC offers ongoing opportunities to reflect on our values and relationships to land and communities, to intentionally plan our next steps, and to grow to become who we want to be. Walking Fellowship

The CRCs Walking Fellowships explore and grow “walking in the city” as a methodology for engaging religion and cities by reading about walking practices then facilitating a discussion of these while walking in the city.

The peripatetic method provides

  • An opportunity to grow and nurture intentional relationships with our cities

  • An approach to learning that takes place outside of conventional classrooms and encourages movement

  • An experiment for connecting academic ideas to lived experiences

  • A mindfulness practice for better understanding our embodied processes
